The Influence of the Administration of Copper Salts on the Release of Pituitary Gonadotropin

Abstract
To study the effect of copper salts, a substance acting on sexual center, on the release of pituitary gonadotropin in rabbit, the author performed separate determinations of the urinary pituitary gonadotropin for FSH and LH by bioassay; measurement of the weight, macroscopic and microscopic examinations of the ovaries 24 hours prior and consequently the administration of copper sulfate in. a dose of lmg./100 mg. B. Wt. intravenously.
The results obtained were as follows:
1) In no case, urinary gonadotropins could be detected in the urine collected in a period of 24 hours or the changes in the excretion of 17-K.S. significant.
2) In the immature female rabbits, FSH release was increased by the administration of Copper sulfate.
3) In the mature female group, LH release was increased significantly and FSH somewhat increased by the administration of copper sulfate.
4) In the group, pretreated with HCG, there was no change in the ovaries by the administration of copper sulfate.
